A SCIENTIFIC METHOD PROBLEM SOLVING KIT
Science and its methods help us to accumulate and evaluate facts and observations that provide explanations about our environment. Once a problem is identified, scientists can formulate hypotheses and devise experiments that will test it. Scientists who are creative will be able to solve problems in many different ways. The purpose of this laboratory is to become familiar with the scientific method.
Each group used a chemplate, Brom Thymol blue indicator, and seven different solutions. First, using the chemplate, one drop of Brom Thymol blue indicator was put into cavities one, five, and nine. A drop of unknown solution one was added to cavity one. Unknown two was added to cavity five and nothing was added to cavity nine. These cavities were then observed for color change. Next, a drop of Brom Thymol blue indicator was added to cavities two, three, four, and six. Solution one was then added to cavity two. The previous procedure was then repeated with bottles two, three, and four to cavities three, four, and six respectively. Chemical factors that may be responsible for the color change were noted. Then based on all the information that was gathered, a possible hypothesis was written. Next, the information found on labels for solutions five, six, and seven were recorded.
