"The Horror! The Horror!" was Kurtz last words n the novel Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad. Those last words can mean many different things, however it depends on the reader on how he would understand it. Kurtz basically said those words to symbolize what he saw in his life. He knew he was going to die and his life was flashing before his eyes. Kurtz did many things in his life. He was an artist, writer, poet, musician, politician, ivory producer, and ran the Inner Station. However, while living in the jungle Kurtz lived a dark gloomy life. He became a thief and a murderer. Because Kurtz let his heart become so dark led to his final words, "The horror! The horror!"
             Those final words sum up Kurtz's life. Kurtz not only did horrible things but also witnessed them being done by other white people. The Europeans went into Africa and tore it apart looking for ivory. The natives were enslaved and were cruelly treated, just to help the "Civilized" people. The white people including Kurtz were so greedy that they filled the jungle with this bad, dark ore. Marlow explained Kurtz very well when he said that he was a "hollow man." However he also referred to the Europeans, they had the same mentality level that Kurtz had at the time.
             "The horror! The horror!" displays the hatred and failure Kurtz has held within him. In that quote he unites the all the dark souls of both Europe and Africa. The greed he had stripped him of his culture an when he was dying he
             realized what had happened to his soul. Human beings have some kind of an obscurity within themselves and his quote makes one think about themselves and what they have lived. "The horror! The horror!" denotes many different meanings, yet somehow explains the entire novel of Heart of Darkness."
