"There were two and one half times as many jobless Negroes as whites in 1963, and their median income was half that of the white man" (King, 10). "The average Negro woman has always had to work to help keep her family in food and clothes" (King, 10). Black people lived in the ghettos and poor neighborhoods, not by choice but because they could not go elsewhere. It was time for a change.
