The Beast Within

The nonexistent beast serves as one of the most important symbols in the novel. It is representing both the terror and the allure of the natural instincts towards violence, power, and savagery that lurk within every human being. The beast is something that comes from the kid's minds. It is clear that the littlun's idea of the monster rising from the sea terrifies the boys because it represents the beast's emergence from their own minds. The kids had been all over the island, but no one had been in the water, so no one knows what is in the water. "Daddy said they haven't found all the animals in the sea yet."
Lurking in the darkness of their minds it increasingly fills them with bloodlust, cruelty, and savagery, embodied in the hunters' wild and violent dance. This just helps proves Simons point that each kid has a beast. Simon comes to understand that beast is not a paranormal force on the island, but rather a force that lives inside each boy. "Unless we get frightened of people."
Jack has the ability to control the boy's fear of the beast and that is what gives him his power. This is shown when he has the Hunters play the game, where one person is the beast and the others kill it. This makes him more powerful because he is able to control their fears. Jack is also ale to protect them from the beast and thus they feel protected by him.
