Oranges are not the only fruit

THE RELIGIOUS IMAGES IN "ORANGES ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT" BY
             JEANETTE WINTERSON
The sense of religion is the backbone of the novel and biblical and religious images and symbols shape the work. Actually, the novel is the spiritual journey of Jeanette from religion bound personality to complete freedom and this journey is completely associated with religious images.
The very beginning of the novel indicates the growth process through which Jeanette is obliged to go by her mother. Jeanette is urged to discriminate between thing to be good and evil, the followers of god and of devil, and she is brought up to be the implied "Sacrificial Lamb" (3). Her Sundays belong to her "Lord", and she is taught by her mother with quotations from the bible. Her mother permanently listens to radio to follow the developments that missionaries have achieved all over the world, and Pastor Spratt is almost more familiar to Jeanette than her own father.
Even the adoption of Jeanette by her mother is related to religious images that her mother gets through her dreams. The reason why she adopts Jeannette lies in the dreams she had which is assigned to find:" a missionary child, a servant of god, a blessing" whom the mother will " dedicate to the lord"(10). That's why the mother does not send the girl to school for a very long time. She is educated with the teachings of the bible, and this education is so strict that Jeanette is given bible quizzes frequently.
Even the structure of the novel is similar to bible to emphasise the religious images throughout the book, and its content is almost in parallel with bible. For example, in the bible Genesis narrates the creation of the world. In the novel this part displays the formation of Jeanette's structure of mind and personality by her mother with the teachings of bible.
