Legalization of Prostitution

             The legalizing of prostitution in the United States would benefit everyone in various ways. Legalizing does not mean hookers on every street corner with a pimp looking over their shoulder, and the mob waiting for their chance to take over the city. Prostitution would be legalized with appropriate regulation (Clark 513). When prostitution is provided under strict guidelines it can be thought of as another profession that isn't looked on as demeaning. With fifty-six legal brothels established in various cities in Nevada it is about time we al benefit from the advantages of legalized prostitution.
             In a recent survey the number of Americans who think the prostitution should be legalized and regulated by the government to reduce the spread of AIDS was 40 percent. The number of men who had admitted to have soliciting prostitutes at one point of time or another was 17 percent. And the estimated total expenditure on prostitutes per day in the United States is 40 million dollars.
             Prostitution is known as the world's oldest trade, which can be seen in the history of prostitution. In the Middle Ages, theologian Thomas Aquinas likened prostitution to a sewer system – despicable but necessary. In the early nineteenth century Napoleon, believed that without prostitutes, "men would attack respectable women in the streets." By 1912, a group called the American Purity Alliance merged with the American Vigilance Committee to form the American Federation for Social Hygiene in an effort to ban prostitution. In 1973 Margo St. James, other activists, and prostitutes in the San Francisco area founded COYOTE, a national organization for women (Clark 515). Today there are over one million people in the United States that are working as prostitutes (Leone and O' Neill).
