             Actors in the Criminal Justice system face ethical dilemmas more often than the average person due to their interaction with the public and because of authority given to them by that same public. The police, arguably, might be subject to more ethical dilemmas than any other branch of the Criminal Justice system. The plight of the police making these ethical decisions on an everyday basis was depicted very well in the television series NYPD Blue.
             There were several issues that I observed in the particular episode that we viewed. Some of these issues were related to some of the ethical philosophies that we discussed in class. One of the ethical issues that were in the show was how the police had the ability to exercise their discretion in almost any way that they wanted. "Law enforcement professionals have a great deal of discretion regarding when to enforce a law, how to enforce it, how to handle disputes, when to use force, and so on." (Discretion and Duty 174) It seemed like the police could almost manipulate or translate the law any way they wanted. There were a couple instances where the police were exercising their discretion to manipulate the law. There was a scene when the police officers where interrogating a suspect on some recent robberies. The police were using their discretion to decide what charges to bring against the suspect. This was an ethical issue because the police were using the suspect's i!
             gnorance of the law to try to cut a deal with him. They needed to cut a deal with the suspect because the arresting officers abused him and the police were afraid that they might not get a conviction because of that abuse. If the suspect was more knowledgeable of the law then he may have known that the police can't decide what to charge him with. That was the job of the District Attorney's office.
