Story of Adam and Eve

The story of Adam and Eve from Genesis is told to show how God created the human race and the world. For the most part, I believe in the events of this story. I believe that God created man in his image as told in Genesis Ch 1 vs. 27 : "God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them." I also believe that God wanted people to be happy, and he gave us freewill in order to do as we choose. In this story the "tree of the knowledge of good and bad" mentioned in Genesis Ch 2 vs. 9 represents God giving all people freewill. By putting a tree there and forbidding them from touching it, he provides them with the option to sin. I believe that Satan exists and he shows himself in the world in different forms of temptation, and in the story of Adam and Eve he is in the form of a serpent when he tempts Eve to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. This story illustrates how people sin and shows how sins lead to bad consequences.
I believe that this story was written just to show a message about how God created people and he gave them the right to choose. This story was not intended to be understood literally but is used to present us with certain truths about the world. I do not think that Adam and Eve actually existed and all people came from them. It is hard for me to believe that some parts of the story occurred in reality. For example, I believe that God is the force behind creation, but I do not believe as Ch 2 vs 7 states that God "formed man out of the clay of the ground."
