Of mice and men

Occasionally it's nice to be reminded of life's simple pleasures. The book of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck did for me what only a classic book such as this can. While I was reading this book I had a best friend, his name was Lennie. Of Mice and Men focuses on one of the most important human relationships: between a man and his best friend. This atypical relationship can teach or simply remind everyone something about life in general. This book also deals with the need of companionship. Loneliness is one of the main themes of this book.
With every paragraph starting with the from the first the reader is pulled little by little into a complex relationship between two realistic friends, George and Lennie. The character George is a small, quick, careful and controlled man. He is a migrant ranch worker, he dreams of one day saving enough money to buy his own place and being his own boss. His only set-back is his mentally handicapped friend Lennie whom he travels with and has been since he promised Lennie's aunt Clara he would look after him after she died. Lennie is mentally slow, enormous and strong. He is George's companion and he is the source of all of the novel's conflict. He is George's opposite both mentally and physically. Lennie's innocence and helplessness, his childish actions, such as his desire to pet soft things reminds me of simple pleasures in life and of the simplicity of being a child.
One of the most important things in life is friendship. Without friends, people would suffer from loneliness and solitude. The characters in this novel are intrigued yet envious of the special friendship shared by George and Lennie because they do not have that in their life. I truly enjoyed reading about this pairs relationship. Sometimes when you read of other peoples life's it can help to better guide yours.
