On February 23, 1429 at the age of seventeen she left home without telling her parents in order to seek out the King and convince him of her mission from God. On her first trip to Voculeurs she convinced her cousin, Durand Luxat to travel along side her. Upon arrival they presented themselves to Baudricourt, the commander for Charles. After briefly hearing them out he said to Luxart "take this crazy wench home and thrash her soundly...Take her to her father and give her a good whipping". After such a negative first encounter Joan did not give up. She persisted and presented herself again. While waiting for an answer from Charles Joan made two more converts, Jean de Metz and Bertrand de Poulegny. Finally, Joan got word that Charles agreed to hear her out. However, Charles decided he was going to play a trick on her to see if she was truly what she claimed to be. He dressed in plain clothes in a room full of officials.
