By most people in society television seems to be the form of media, which most accurately represents their own lives. In regard to women's roles on television advertisements and soap operas are the most predominate places the housewife verses sex symbol roles are seen. In other words, these two forms of media depict societies ideology of mothers. "Generally, in the world of television, women tend to be confined to a life dominated by the family and personal relationships far more than men, outside the home, as well as in it. For example, according to a study by McNeil, about 75% of men are depicted as employed whereas less than 50% of women are (Gunter, 1986: 11)." (Ingham, 1995, p.1). An example of a show where women where both objectified and presented in the housewife stereotype is Married With Children. The women on this show were always dressed in skintight clothing and were not portrayed as being intelligent. Other programs include Charlie's Angels, Baywatch where the women were objectified, and Neighbours and Seventh Heaven, which present women in the traditional housewife and mother roles.
Advertising is a major villain in the way it constantly creates advertisements based around depicting women as housewives and domestic goddesses.
