Willard C. Smith was born on September 25 1968 in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the second child of Caroline and Willard C. Smith senior, joining his older sister Pamela and later followed twin siblings Ellen and Harry. He grew up in a strict, middle class household. His father owned a refrigerator company and his mother worked for the local Board of Education as a school administrator. Will's father was also an Air Force veteran. Will started rapping at the age of 12, when hip hop was still only a marginal part of mainstream culture, teaming up with close pal Jeff Townes to become half of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Together they released four multi-platinum albums and won two Grammy awards. By the time Will was 18 he was a millionaire and a year later he was broke. Will was not a hardcore gangster rapper who was too often associated with crime, drugs, violence and sexism. Will says " I could never understand these guys that make up records that are !
nothing but swearing and killing and misogynistic ranting, I just never want my family to be embarrassed like that" (Brian J. Robb, p.5).
Will Smith is a driven man, determined to carry out his master plan to be "the best" at whatever he turns his talents to whether in the fields of rap music, television or blockbuster movies. By the age of 21, Smith was back and looking for a new challenge and he found it in the successful "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". This made him established in the business and gain some popularity. Since then, he has moved to the larger screen, becoming recognizable in Independence Day, Men in Black, Enemy of the State, Wild, Wild West and recently The Legend of Bagger Vance, "concreting his reputation as the number one actor of his generation" (Brian J.Robb, p.127).
