This poem tells one about how the author feels about the history itself. The line "it is so dull and gruesome how we die" tells the reader that the writer feels bad about how the life goes. In line "Unlike writing, life never finishes. Abel was finished; death is not remote", the writer contradict himself by saying " life never finishes" and "death is not remote." It means that there would be a life beyond death and the death we will face later is not too far away.
The overall mood of this poem is sad. There are many descriptions such as "his cows crowding like skulls against high-voltage wire" and "his baby crying all night like a new machine". Basically, I see sad images of Abel murdered by Cain and the innocence of child wasting away as he grows to be a man. In addition, I see the emptiness of people's lives where they just come and go without any real excitements.
The line "a flash-in-pan electrifies the skeptic, his cows crowding like skulls against high-voltage wire, his baby crying all night like a new machine" gives me strong negative images, particularly related to people's lives. This line somewhat portrays the hardships of people. I even feel offended by this line because it gives me such a overpowering emotion. I also feel bittersweet in line "O there's a terrifying innocence in my face drenched with the silver salvage of the mornfrost". There is a little bit of sarcasm in this line. Overall, I see many negative images where East of Eden banishing Adam and Eve and the author drenched with horror.
