Overview of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

             As humans, we all have sexual needs. Whether or not in a relationship, a person should be very careful about choosing a sex partner. Sex is something that should be treated very seriously. Sexually transmitted diseases are some of the most infectious diseases in the United States. Commonly called STDs, these diseases infect many people each year. With case studies and statistics I plan to explain the dangers involved with such diseases. I also intend to explain the seriousness of sexually transmitted diseases and the possible treatments for them.
             Many STDs can be cured if they are treated early, but they can also cause problems with reproduction, health, or lead to severe and/or permanent damage. These problems may include, blindness, cancers, heart disease, and death (Brandt 21). STDs are growing rapidly in the U.S. and many people are not aware of their existence. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes herpes infections. More than 40 million Americans are infected with genital herpes and as many as 500,000 new cases are reported each year. Women who acquire herpes during pregnancy can transmit the virus to their babies. Untreated HSV infections in newborns can result in mental retardation (Ross 7). Herpes is not the only disease that is spreading quickly. New chlamydial infections affect four million people annually, and 45,000 Americans are diagnosed with AIDS every year (Ross 16).
             Today there are more than twenty known STDs throughout the world, affecting more than 13 million men and women in this country each year. Many STDs are curable, but at the same time, many are not curable. AIDS, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, was first reported in the U.S. in 1981. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a virus that destroys the body's ability to fight off infection (Ross 5).
