Right now as we speak, in some private and public schools, students are passing one another in the hallways getting prepared for another day at school. They are all dressed alike, boys wearing Khakis and solid colored Polo's while the girls are wearing pleated skirts and white collard shirts. So you may be asking yourselves, what are the advantages of making children wear uniforms to school? By mandating school uniforms the violence in schools will decrease dramatically, students will find themselves focusing more on their school work, and finally the mandating of school uniforms would support the equal treatment of students by not only by their peers but by the teachers as well.
             A. Schools are supposed to be a place where students feel safe and where they feel a sense of belonging. Today schools are faced with problems such as crimes, sex offenses, weapon offenses, fights, assault and battery, and vandalism. In our society, children have been violently injured or even murdered for their designer clothes, sneakers, and other personal belongings. "Due to the increased occurrences of school violence, one out of every 10-12 youths that stay away from schools do so because of fear" states Keith King, author of "Should School Uniforms be Mandated in Elementary Schools". Therefore, violence in schools destroys such an environment, and can negatively impact student's motivation for learning.
             B. In schools that have not implemented uniforms student's attention is no longer on their studies but are focused more on who can afford the latest fashions. Some students may feel as though school is all about the latest fads or which clothes are "IN", instead of directing their attention to whether or not their homework for math class is completed.
