The death penalty has been one of the nation's most controversial issues. Those who favor the death penalty should realize that by execution the criminal is not given anytime to reflect on their mistake. People should not be sentenced to die since the reasons for executing someone are not strong enough to absolutely persuade everyone.
             Those who favor the death penalty believe that criminals who have committed murder deserve to die because they use up the precious taxpayers money. However there is no doubt that someone can do more alive than dead. By working, the criminal can pay back society and also their victim and the victim's family. First of all, the offender should be required to compensate the victim's family with the offender's own income from employment or community service. There is no reason for the criminal to receive any compensation for his work, since money has no value in jail. For example, in 1924 Leopold and Loeb were nineteen when they kidnapped and murdered a fourteen-year-old boy just to see what it was like. They were both spared the death penalty and sentenced to life imprisonment. Together they accomplished to teach the illiterates to read, helped build schools and made significant developments in World War II Malaria Project.
             Secondly, officials often defend the death penalty as not being cruel and unusual, but in the case of John Evans who was executed by electrocution in 1983. This argument is false because according to witnesses at the scene Mr. Evans was given three charges of electrocution over a period of fourteen minutes. After the first and second charges, Mr. Evans was still conscious and smoke was coming from all over his body because of his flesh burning. An official there even tried to stop the execution on accounts of it being cruel and unusual punishment, but was unsuccessful.
