But it is how this family scene is filmed that brings to light the sexual myths of black girls/women. The shielding sheet usually used in sex scenes does not cover Drew's body; in fact Flipper actually pulls the sheet away from her to reveal more of her naked body. She is exposed and her body, as well as her emotions, becomes the direct focus of the male gaze. As bell hooks points out in her essay "Selling Hot Pussy," the black woman is
             ...not focused on [as] the complete black woman on display at a fancy ball in the civilized heart of European culture.... She is there to entertain guests with the naked image of Otherness. They are not to look at her as a whole human being. They are to notice only certain parts.
