Knowlege in Society

             Knowledge is the key to success in any society, without knowledge us as human beings cannot survive. It is also important that knowledge have a means of being passed on from person to person. The invention of the printing press in 1450 changed and revolutionized the way knowledge was spread thought the world forever. Knowledge was now more readily available and easier to pass on to many more people.
             Before the advent of the printing press the Catholic Church was the only source for written materials. In a sense the held and controlled all the written knowledge. All the written materials that the Church held was passed down, transcribed by monks who were believed that they were doing a service to god by copying the literature, so they didn't question anything. This was means for a lot of incorrect information. This was also a very slow way of distributing information, and made the process of passing on knowledge very long.
             The invention of the printing press changed the world. With its ability to produce mass quantities of accurately printed material, it revolutionized and spread knowledge around the world. There was now no need for monks or scribes, the interchangeable, moveable type and paper just couldn't compare to the monks work. This made printed materials a lot more accessible and accurate, and soon came into high demand by businesses. Businesses used it to print forms and documentation that was crucial to the accounting aspects of their work. Universities soon benefited because they had a means of fast, accurate production of textbooks.
             As the production of printed products skyrocketed, the Church was no longer able to control the information people were receiving.
