Correctional Services (DOCS). They cannot have committed a violent crime or sexual offence or been previously sentenced to an intermediate prison term. Because Shock Incarceration participants are released earlier than their mandated minimum prison terms it is essential that the criteria for participation eliminate those offender that pose a risk to society. The offenders must also be willing to participate in the program. For this reason judges cannot sentence offender to Shock Incarceration. Those offenders who are admitted to the DOCS and are legally eligible for Shock Incarceration are sent to Lake View Shock and Incarceration and Facility (SICF) where they receive orientation and screening. Here offenders learn about the requireme!
             nts of the program and must decide if they want to volunteer for the program or serve their normal sentencing. At the same time offender are screened for physical problems that might hinder the ability to fully participate in the program.
             Staff in any DOCS can apply for opening in at SICF 's (Clark 4). After being chosen they are put through a 4-week training program, which is largely experimental in
             format. The format simulates the Shock Incarceration of offenders. It includes physical training drill and ceremony. This is designed to familiarize the staff with the main concepts and goals of the program. It also gives them a better understanding of the offenders that they will be working with. All staff is the fundamentals of decision-making, substance abuse concepts, learning theory, physical training, and drill and ceremony. There is also an emphasis on teamwork and group unity as staff from different disciplines work with inmates as a team (Clark 5).
