A relationship is an association between two or more people at different degrees. Most relationships are mutual and others are hostile. Mutual relationships are very important as well as delicate. They can keep people together as long as one person doesn't turn there back on the other. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, a relationship develops between Gene and Phineas. This relationship is very similar to the one between Doodle and his older brother in "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. Although these two relationships are very similar, both of them have their differences.

Phineas and Doodle both died because the person they counted on the most let them down and they were too good for the world they existed in. Phineas counted on Gene to be his best friend. He even rejected the idea of Gene trying to ruin his athletic career. It broke Phineas's heart when he realizes that Gene really wanted to end his career and he died because he couldn't handle the truth. Doodle counted on his older brother to be there for him all the time. When they were both running a storm arriv!
