             In 1885 Wright's parents divorced and he never saw his father again. Wright promised himself to take care of his family. That same year, Wright took a job working for Allan Conover, the Dean of Admissions at the University of Wisconsin. In return, he was allowed to study civil engineering for two semesters. (Brief Biography page online) Wright felt that the small salary he was receiving from Conover was not adequate for his family's needs. One night after contemplating what to do, he decided that in order to advance his career, he must go to Chicago where there were many well-known architectural firms. That very night, Frank went to a pawnshop with a set of books and his coat and bought a train ticket to his newfound providence. (McDonough 26-27)
             When Frank Lloyd Wright came to the city, he did not know what he was doing or where he was going. The first three days, he frenetically searched for work. On the fourth day, with only pennies left and the realization that not finding work would send him home to Madison in defeat, Wright went to be interviewed by Cecil Corwin at the office of architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee. Corwin took an immediate liking to Wright. Silsbee, when introduced, also liked Wright and the designs he brought with him. Corwin was generous enough to let Wright stay with his family until he got started. Wright also asked to borrow ten dollars from him, which he enveloped immediately and sent back home to Madison.
