In The Crucible by Arthur Miller there are many literary themes used to make the story more appealing and life like. The theme that is the most highly expressed is that of Hysteria.
            
             In the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, a town existing most of Puritans, any sign, word, or even thought of the devil was considered immoral. One evening, many girls were found dancing, naked in the woods, with incriminating devil worshiping paraphernalia. When discovered they were accused of practicing witchcraft. The rumor of possible witches in Salem, quickly spread throughout the community. Three girls Abigail ,Tituba, and Mary Warren caused mass hysteria in Salem through their alleged wrong doings.
            
             Most of the hysteria causing trouble revolved around Abigail. Abigail, the only girl who was actually practicing witchcraft was the center of all the wrong . Abigail was a servant in the house of John and Goody Proctor, when Goody found out that Abigail had been having an affair of with her husband. Abigail was then removed from their house, leaving with bitter and evil feelings toward Goody. Abigail then promoted all the girls in the village to help her create a spell to do away with Goody so she could have John to herself. Abigail when caught, falsely accused others of doing witchcraft and made the town go crazy. The black slave that Abigail put most of the emphasis on was Tituba.
            
             Tituba, not knowing that her simple dancing would lead to the hysterical acts of the town, was shocked when the townsmen came ripping her out of her house and beating her with a whip. Tituba then told these men that she could not help it, that in her sleep Goody Sarah and Goody Osburn came to her with the devil and possessed her. She then make everyone feel sorry for her ,and the doctors in the town, supposedly freed her from the devils hands. This act, made everyone turn toward Sarah and Goody Proctor as the witches.
