Liberty

             What exactly does liberty mean? Well, to me it can mean a number of things. First of all, it can mean acting in whatever way you see fit for satisfying your own interests, desires and expectations to the extent that you don't infringe upon the very same liberties of the others. Secondly, liberty means independence and freedom from physical restraint or external force, and our basic rights that the government cannot take away or interfere with. It is also a concept that protects all individuals, frees man and constrains the state. I think that liberty gives equal rights to all men and that they should have the same potential to do things. Through liberty, no one should be discriminated for their race, beliefs, or ideas. I strongly believe that all men are equal because we were created the same by God. I also believe that man is mostly good and those that aren't, can be reformed. Change should be brought about that is good for the community it is for and should be decided by the people themselves, not the government. People should have more freedom to govern themselves and the government should interfere less to prevent a clash of different ideas. If people should govern themselves they are controlling their own lives, and therefore will naturally want the best. I compared these thoughts on the definition of liberty to John Stuart Mill's and Karl Marx's, and found myself agreeing more with John Stuart Mill's thoughts on liberty than Marx's, however, I still agreed with them both on some level.
             First off, both Marx and Mill believe that there are positive and negative liberties given to us. Positive liberties are freedoms to do certain things. Negative liberties are freedoms to do all but what is forbidden.
