Just as understaffing and improper staffing is a problem in nursing homes, abuse is also a problem that is of equal concern. It is a major problem that is faced by the nursing home industry today. Abuse is commonly thought of as physical abuse, but there are currently seven categories of nursing home abuse that have been identified by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. They are physical abuse, misuse of restraints (chemical and physical), verbal/emotional abuse, physical neglect, verbal/emotional neglect, and personal property abuse (Dangio). This abuse is unacceptable. All nursing homes claim to provide a good service to their residents, which is evidently not present in some homes.
