Canterbury tales

             The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer demonstrates the diverse personalities in society. The ability of all people to relate to the characters makes their themes understandable. In the Prologue Chaucer introduces briefly the characters of the work. Each character uniquely presents traits and themes all can apply. This paper focuses on the following three characters of the Friar, the Oxford Cleric, and the Merchant, from the many that inhabit the work.
             Chaucer describes the Friar as a ideal religious person, "a wanton one and merry", and "So glib with gallant phrase and well turned speech", until examined closer. He later appears a hypocrite, "He was an easy man in penance-giving where he could hope to make a decent living; It's a sure sign whenever gifts are given to a poor Order that a man's well shriven"(lines 227-230), states that the Friar takes indulgences. It goes on to say "He knew the taverns well in every town and every innkeeper and barmaid too" which one can conclude that he broke a few vows here and there. The Friar's character portrays is a pious and a two-faced man, who presents one thing, but behind the scenes, exactly opposes that fescade.
             The Friar and the Merchant in a way share the same theme. The Merchant describes a wreck "motley dress". Boastfully "He told of his opinions and pursuits, In solemn tones, and how he never lost", one can interpret this as haughtiness or a front to hide the truth that he is poor "His wits at work, none knew he was in debt". As many people do for many situations the Merchant makes up himself because he may be ashamed. As we all know this can not last for long, because one can not hide the truth for long.
             Lastly, the Oxford Cleric who immediately presents a dull and boring character, "But had a hollow look, a sober stare". He represents one of those people who only care ...
