The poem "The Unknown Citizen" by W.H. Auden portrays a community which follows
             basic communist rules. The citizen is a man who had many accomplishments in life- all of
             which were for the betterment of the community- and at his death he was regarded as, it
             seems, just one number out of millions. The narrator seems to be praising the man for his
             conformity in every line of this poem- he speaks as though a mundane and average life is
             orthodox, and that any other is detrimental to the way of life. The author, Auden, has a
             very satirical tone and in order to realize this, one must see that the conformity portrayed
             is deadly to not only the citizen, but the community as well.
             The "unknown citizen" has become just a number rather than a real person;
             JS/07/M/378 is what his gravestone reads- a gravestone that is "Erected by the State."
             There is no personalization of the man throughout the poem- his name not ever given, his
             experiences never divulged. All that had been told was what duties he had fulfilled to
             better his community- even the fact that he had children which "added to the population"
             is regarded as a duty. The organizations and establishments of the government in this
             poem are capitalized to show importance- as though they are important; as though they
             dominate all. The community appears to be a great one, but in actuality it is communist
             and hazardous to society. This poem is a warning that complacency and conformity is
             death and that personal freedom- not communism- is the way to better one's community
