There are abnormalities within the brain that lead to various intellectual and behavioral problems in early childhood, as well as problems within the central nervous system. A considerable range of intellectual functioning characterizes children with FAS. In a report by Ann P. Streissguth, it was established that a range of IQ scores from 16 to 105 with a mean IQ of 65 was found in children affected with this disorder. The report was based on twenty cases of FAS, where severity of the FAS was related to IQ, and the most severely affected children were found to have the lowest IQ scores (Streissguth, 1997). Children with FAS usually have some developmental delays including language and speech delays.
