Fannie Lou Townsend was born in a Mongomery County in Mississippi. She was the 20th
child in her family. When she was 2 she and her family moved to sunflowercounty,
Mississippi. The townsends were poor sharecrppers. A share cropper someone who
works on someone elses land and gives the owner 50% of what they make. Sharecroppers
were only allowed to go to school for 4 month a year. Fannie went to school until 6th
grade because the family needed her to work for extra money.She then kept her education
up by going to a strangers Babtist church were she learned to read the bible. Since she
was black she did not have ant friends only the people that she worked with on the
farm.there was alot of times when the family was short on money . Especially in the
winter when there was no food to plant so they went from house to house asking for food.
Her mother used to chop down trees to make some money. Until one day when a splinter
got in her eye and she was not able to take it out . So she slowly began to loose her Eye
sight. As you can see ,Fannie Lou Townsend had a very rough childhood.
Fannie Lou Hammer never went to collage because blacks were not allowed to go
to collage then. Instead she worked as a sharecropper to pay off her dept and to earn
money. Dipite not going to collage , she still managed to be a success later on.
Fannie married a trackter driver and a sharecropper that worked the same field.
Fannie Lou Hammer was a record keeper wich ment that she kept track of how long
everyone worked and how much cotton everyone picked up. For extra money Fannie Lou
Hammer cleaned someone's house . His name was Marlow, he was very rich.
Fannie Lou hammer always wanted to register to vote but she was not allowed.
She had done it twice and she waas unable to but the third time, she went with 18 other
