A new program has been established to offer clean needles to IV drug users, in hopes of preventing the spread of harmful diseases like HIV and Hepatitas. To obtain these clean needles, a laminated I.D. card must be presented, and used needles must be dropped off.
             Those in favor of this program say that it will drastically decrease the number of people infected with HIV. Thirty-three people are infected daily with HIV through IV drug use. Studies have been done, and have shown that needle exchange programs do not encourage new drug use.
             I find it interesting that the government thinks that by providing drug users a safer environment in which to use drugs, it will save lives. While the addict may not die from HIV or other illnesses, what about drug overdose? What about heart attacks and other problems caused by drug use? Are these not as important now?
             What about the people that didn't use drugs, because they were afraid of getting HIV? This will now give them a free ticket to do all the drugs they want! By allowing this program to give out clean needles, we are saying that it is okay to do drugs. In case people have forgotten, drugs are illegal for a reason. They are deadly.
             Instead of investing our resources in safe drug use, we should put that energy and time into stopping drug use all together. That will ensure no more infections through needles. What about the other ways that HIV is contracted? Why can't we help prevent unprotected sex as well?
             Our last president has an interesting term, and will be remembered for many things that he did wrong. I, however, feel that one of the best things he did, was to deny the bill to allow needle exchange. Today's society has become so accustomed to allowing people to get away with things, that we are saying that it is okay to use drugs. It's okay to get really drunk, just don't drive.
