             "Schools need to take on their responsibility for the health of the minors in their care. This duty of care extends to the school canteen." Discuss.
             Teenage obesity is a growing concern for Australia and is one of the pressing global health problems that we encounter everyday; one in every five people in Australia, according to statistics, is obese. In addition, the World Health Organization estimates 1.3 million people are overweight. We need to assail this problem at its roots, namely the inexpensive, high-calorie junk foods that are being gobbled down, truckload, by teenagers. The battle of the bulge can be won if schools are conscious of the well-being of the children placed in their care and implement measures to combat it. However, just schools working will not be enough; it will also take the government and the kids themselves to ward off the 'fat' man. A school cannot neglect their responsibility and drop the buck at food, instead schools need to take up its' role. Parents have faith in the school they sent their child to and don't just want a school with a pleasant environment nor do they want one with solely academic excellence but they want a healthy canteen menu where their kid won't become a growing statistic; one fifth of Australians are obese. In addition, reducing the junk teenagers eat also reduces the chance of other chronic diseases directly related to fat such as heart disease and heart blockages.
             Ever heard of the saying 'Eat well, study well, play hard'? If teenagers don't eat healthy lunches they almost certainly will not have the vigour to work during the next two hours of school. A reference of this is: a man recently ate McDonalds for a week and his liver turned brown and face, pale. Eating a 100% fat pizza, garlic bread, dim sims, pies, chocolate bars, a hotdog and a can of coke over a week unquestionably will not promote strength. Kids will not
