Violence

Physical violence is more of an issue in a male institution. Males find themselves harassed by other inmates. It is also a problem in women's institutions but just not as much. Women are more physically abused by the guards that are suppose to be there to protect them.
Psychological victimization occurs in both male and female institutions. Inmates are terrorized by other inmates, and spend years in fear of harm. Some inmates request segregation, others lock themselves in, and some are hermits by choice.
Economic victimization also occurs in both institutions. Other inmates robe them and they are unable to complain because they shouldn't have had it in the first place. Inmates pay exorbitant prices for the illicit goods and services, which are itself, another form of victimization.
Prison riots, work stoppages, sit-down strikes, and similar disturbances are rare events. Prison riots are a collective attempt by inmates to take over part or all of the prison. Riots may be expressive or instrumental. When prison riots and other disturbances occur they are often deadly.
