The more visible case involved the cold-blooded execution of U.S. Senator Daniel Fitzpatrick in his Georgetown home. The only clue found is a mysterious poem signed "Jack and Jill" left behind to taunt the police. The second killing involved a little girl, brutally beaten and dumped by a nearby public school in Alex's neighborhood. As more famous people are killed, the law enforcement officers of the Federal, state, and local governments start to panic. The killer(s) laughingly informs everyone he is in training, with his ultimate target being the president. Alex becomes the liaison with the Secret Service but continues to investigate both cases.
