Sitting Bull was A Hunkpappa Lakota Chief and holy man under whom the Lakota tribe united on the Dakota plains. Sitting Bull fought the American Army. He didn't believe the American promises. He was born in 1831 on the Grand River in what is now South Dakota at a Lakota place called Many Caches. Many Caches is where there were many food storage pits. Sitting Bull was given the name Tatanka-iotanka which describes a Buffalo Bull sitting on its back legs. Sitting Bull was a leader of the Strongheart warrior society as a young man and later a member of the group Silent Eaters. This group worried about tribal welfare. When he was 14 he went to his first battle with the Crow.
This was when he first saw Americans. In 1864 he fought his first battle with Americans in the Battle of Killdeer. He was widely respected for his bravery and insight. He became leader of the Lakota in 1868.
In 1874 when gold was discovered in the Black Hills trouble brewed. Sitting Bull didn't want to give up his land. The land was banned to the miners but they came anyway. When the army didn't keep them out Sitting Bull decided to do it himself. Sitting Bull had Crazy Horse as his hero. They fought for 4 years and even fought Custer. But in 1881 it became hard for him to feed his tribe. The buffalo were almost gone. The came south to surrender. He went to Canada and went back and forth to his tribe.
On May 10, 1883, Sitting Bull finally rejoined his tribe at Standing Rock. He still wasn't happy with the reservation. In 1885 Sitting Bull was allowed to leave the reservation and went to work in the Buffalo Bill Wild West show. He made $50 a month. He did this for four months only because he couldn't stand the white society.
