             TOTAL ETHNIC ORIGIN ETHNIC ORIGIN
             For all other appointments such as tribunal chairs, no 1992 data was available. In 1992, 0.87% of all judicial appointments were black. This had risen to 1.3 % by 1995.
             ii) Magistrates Courts There was no requirement to keep statistics on the ethnic origin of magistrate court staff in 1989. The 1995 figures however, show that there were no black justices clerks, that 17 out of 370 deputy justices were black and, in addition, just 21 out of 1,470 court ushers were black.
             Administrative Clerical and Secretarial
             For Magistrates' Courts staff therefore 3.9% were black.
             iii Magistrates On the 31st December 1989 there were 24,521 magistrates of whom 1.92% were black. On the 1st January 1995 the number of magistrates had increased to 25,723. However no figures are available for the current period for the total number of magistrates who emanated from an ethnic minority. However in 1989 4.7% of all new appointments were black and this had risen to 8.1% for 1995 (3).
             iv Crown Prosecution Service The Crown Prosecution Service has collated relevant statistics since 1991. Based on partial returns, these figures show that the number of ethnic minority staff increased throughout the whole service from 5.9% in 1991 to 7.5% in 1995.
