Gun control is a very controversial issue. I firmly believe that the distribution of guns
should be controlled. There are over 20,000 murders per year and in approximately 62%
of murders, guns were used in the commission of the crime. There is indeed a problem with gun
violence and everyone must work together to prevent it. Statistics show that guns are the number
one weapon used for murder and suicide. Guns are second only to auto accidents as the leading
cause of death due to injury. Gun violence is mainly the result of people being drunk, angry,
careless or depressed and this is why we must take the guns out of their hands. In most situations
death would not be a result if guns weren't available to be used. Public health organizations feel
that the best way to curb a public health problem is through prevention and that's how I feel. Gun
distribution should be controlled to the extent that only qualified people with good reason
have the right to purchase - such as for sport or hunting. Having a gun for protection is
not a good enough reason, but no matter what the reason, guns pose a hazard for others.

becoming a target of violence. In fact, between 1961 and 1981, according to the American
Association of Suicidology, the suicide rate for fifteen to twenty-four year olds has
increased 150% due to the increased use of firearms. If only their was more control over
which hands guns got into, violence like this would have decreased. By not having guns,
people are more likely to solve their problems without pulling a trigger.
Some may say that they need a gun to protect themselves, but statistics show that
