Inequality of women

             Kate Chopin's writing of 'Desiree's Baby' did more than entertain readers, the story was written for a purpose. The purpose was intended not only to entertain readers, but to prove that she was a serious writer and should be treated as such equal to male writers. It may appear at first that 'Desiree's Baby' was a story about racism, but it was more than that. Chopin uses this story to express her feminist beliefs. This story is not about racism, it is how society's standard in her day treated women unequal to men and how fair and unjust she felt it to be.
             Chopin first starts her story to express the views that men had of women, which is that women are inferior to men. "Monsieur in riding....found her lying asleep in the shadow of the big stone pillar (pg. 28, par. 2)" is Chopin's first notion of man's attitude of women. She implies that women are to not be outspoken in nature of any sort. For example, it would not be accepted for a woman to take part in debates, to question authority of man, or even to appear to be more intelligent than men. Rather, women are to lie 'asleep', to be silent as if in the shadow of the big stone pillar' which represents man.
             In paragraph four it is further shown how the typical idea of Chopin's time that men were to be respected and held in high regard such as that of a knight in shining armor. Here we have a young woman portrayed to be weak and unable to care for herself to be rescued by a this man named Armand Aubigny. "The wonder was that he had not loved her before" which is because Desiree was too young to understand woman's role at a young age. How could Armand come to love a woman if she has not learned her role of submission? How convenient and quickly too Armand falls in love with her especially now.
