Here's a classic small-town scene: Most of the young people have left, one mostly-empty church and one gossipy, infrequent newspaper remain, most people keep to their own increasingly harder lives, change and strangers come and go and are borne with a little more loss. Nobody can save a town like that. The people who live there have forgotten how to live together, have forgotten the reasons their ancestors came together, have forgotten how wonderful life used to be. But once in a while, a little miracle can happen, usually an accident, that can bring people together again, even if it's only for the last time.
             In The Milagro Beanfield Wars, that miraculous accident is a kick to an irrigation control unit. One man whose beanfield has dried up and failed accidentally brings it back to life with water that newcomers had stolen away for a rich-people land development. And suddenly, other people in town start to wake up, especially as the newcomers start to cause trouble for them over the water. Some instinct of love and cooperation revives in them as the beans begin to grow, and though they fight the instinct out of ingrown apathy and despair, the will to survive - and more importantly, the will to power, the will to hang on to their control of their lives and land - forces them together.
             Sure, there are also angelic apparitions, a faith healing, and assorted other fantastic details in this film, including the stupendous transformation of a naive college boy into a real person, but the real story in this film is of the miracle all small-town kids who love the good life they knew still desire - one last reunion, one last fight to save not just the symbol of a town - a beanfield, in this case - but to save the town itself and the great love that planted the town in that earth and those people.
