Changes in the Work Force

             Changes in the American workplace have occurred more frequently in the past two decades. Many factors have played a role in this trend. For example, the United States has gone through a recession, a period of high inflation, a "dot com" boom and subsequent bust, recovery, and then a recent recession. As a result, businesses have been forced to adjust to the economy, down-sizing when necessary, hiring additional employees when production is needed, and restructuring to meet the demands. Additionally, technology has rapidly changed in the past two decades, with the introduction of personal computers, internet, intranet, and various software programs. Businesses have struggled to keep up with the demands of the modern day, and employees have struggled with the changes that go along with those demands.
             In order for the change to occur smoothly, and with the least resistance, certain steps should be followed during the planning and implementing stages. The first step is to prepare for the change. During this stage, an effective leader will inform their employees of the anticipated change, including details of what is to be expected. If the team has undergone a similar change in the past, the leader should be able to learn from past experiences and explain what is to be expected. The second step is to plan for the change, including contingency plans in case there are setbacks. Additionally, during the planning stage, leaders should assess their employees to determine what skills will be needed, and encourage employee input at each stage of change. The third step assists in the transition stage of change. Leaders should develop temporary policies and procedures, allowing for flexibility.
