up at Thornfield on the third story. Getting married to Rochester would mean she would become a mistress-losing her autonomy. Knowing it would be impossible for her to marry, she leaves Thornfield. Jane becomes homeless with no money and starts begging for food. She was soon taken in by three sisters-Mary, Diana, and St. John-at the Moor house. She quickly befriends them and soon realizes that they are her cousins. She discovered her Uncle John had died and left her 20,000 pounds and shares her inheritance with her new family. St. John decides to travel to India as a missionary and asked Jane to go with him as his wife. Jane refuses to go as his wife because she has no love for him however; he continues to pressure her to reconsider.
