A loyal companion

             People need loyal friends as a support system. Having loyal friends is a major issue discussed and documented in today's society. There are many novels written dealing with the issue of friendship. It is not only an important topic, but also a value and privilege to be experienced by all.
             The definition of the word loyal states: "1: faithful in allegiance to one's government 2: faithful esp. to a cause or ideal" (Webster, 279). Loyal and trustworthy friends are those who can be trusted to be honest whenever called upon. Loyalty is a quality many people search for in a good friend.
             In the novel Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is an expert example of the loyal and genuine friendship that Piggy displays to Ralph throughout their adventure. Ralph was the blonde and handsome, the ideal twelve year old boy. He was the novel's protagonist. Stranded on a tropical island with a group of boys, Ralph is elected leader and attempts to build a miniature civilization. The one they called Piggy was somewhat Ralph's sidekick. Piggy was Ralph's lieutenant. Piggy represented the scientific, rational side of civilization.
             When the story first opens in the book, Ralph is not exactly pleasant to Piggy. In fact, he was intentionally rude to him at times. For example, in the beginning Ralph and Piggy are getting acquainted Piggy tries to be friendly to Ralph, but Ralph wants nothing to do with Piggy. When Piggy and Ralph begin getting acquainted, Ralph told the boys, "He's not fatty, his real name's Piggy!" (Golding, 21). Ralph does this to hurt Piggy and obviously succeeds.
             By the end of Lord of the Flies, Ralph proved to be a loyal friend to Piggy. Ralph was sticking up for Piggy when in need the way that Piggy was doing for Ralph. "Listen. We've come to say this. First you've got to give back Piggy's specs. If he hasn't got them he can't see." (Golding, 177) Ralph says this to all of the mean boys on the...
