The character of Jay Gatsby, one of the main characters and probably the most important, is very ambiguous; it seems like he has two personalities that often collide with one the another. Probably it's precisely this that makes Gatsby so exciting and so fantastic not only in his positive aspects but also in the negative ones.
             So, why is he considered so great, as the title of the novel itself suggests?
             First of all, it would be good to consider the relationships that Gatsby has, in the novel, with the other characters, especially with Daisy and Nick.
             Principally, with Nick, he has a profound relationship based on respect, even if Nick can't justify the way of living of Gatsby, the fact that he's a bootlegger, and that he has made himself in an unmoral way. For this reason, at the beginning of the book, the narrator says, "Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." by this, he means that Gatsby could never have been his friend because of his corruption. Still, in the end, he has, because in the future, "Gatsby turned out all right."
             For Nick, Gatsby is great because there is something gorgeous about him because he has "an extraordinary gift for hope," a gift that makes him fight till death to reach his dream, his dream of happiness and richness with the only woman he has ever loved in his life, Daisy.
             Moreover, there's the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby. This is a strange relationship because these two characters are very different from one with the other. Firstly, Daisy is a rich person who has never had to do anything for her richness, and for this, she is very fortunate, but she isn't a good person. She's careless about anything and anyone, and probably she never really loved Gatsby also if she tells it. We can see this in the end when she decides to stay with her husband Tom; also, if he has had an affair with another woman and does not leave him for Gatsby, she would have done it...
