Diversity is the differences between people, the qualities, features, skills, and talents that make us humans unique and distinguish us from one another. It gives our lives variety, bestows groups of people with a broad range of skills and knowledge, and facilitates the learning of an assortment of knowledge from others. Regrettably, diversity also brings with it enmity, animosity, hatred, loathing, and discrimination towards others because of their differences.
             An example of how diversity provides variety is my orchestra. There are many different instruments, each with its own distinct sound that contributes to the overall sound of the orchestra. Without all of these diverse instruments, the group would not sound as good. However, when all the different, diverse instruments are put together, the orchestra sounds wonderful. My US History 1 class illustrates how diversity bestows a group with a broad range of skills and knowledge, and also how it permits one to learn an assortment of knowledge from other people. In my class there are people who participate in and enjoy basketball, football, wrestling, paintball, drawing, rock climbing, photography, Buddhism, swimming, dancing, etc. This gives the entire group an extensive range of skills and knowledge. It also allows somebody interested in Buddhism to gain knowledge about this religion and its practices from a member of the class, for instance. The affects of diversity are not positive all the time. For example, my father says, "When I was a teenager in high school, my classmates and I used to make fun of this one kid all the time because he was interested in and knowledgeable about things that no one else cared about" (Wang). This quote demonstrates how somebody can be the object of loathing and discrimination because of their diversity in their interests, features, or qualities.
