Silencing

             It's so very sad how often society brushes off the world around us. We hardly take it to heart unless it's in our home field. How many truly remember the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001? Unless a family member or friend was hurt by the attacks, chances are the majority of society has blown it off. They have forgotten in order to go on with your life the way you would like it to. The world around us is silencing themselves and each other in order to portray society the way we want it. In "Silencing," by Derrick Jensen, forgetting the atrocities of the world are brought to light as we overlook and "forget" daily the problems in life.
             Jensen has his own views on life and after reading his memoir chapter his views are understandable. "There is a language older by far and deeper than words. It is the language of bodies, of body on body, wind on snow, rain on trees, wave on stone. It is the language of dream, gesture, symbol, memory. We have forgotten this language. We do not even remember that it exists." (Jensen 2). Body language, unlike the spoken word, is a natural skill humans have. According to Jensen, we have lost touch with ourselves and cannot decipher others' body language. Without even knowing it, we are hurting and lying to others. We are hurting others through our actions and persecution against others in the world. Jensen is right when he says body language has been around much longer and is deeper than words. Body language can be a powerful tool when having an interaction with another person.
             Silencing is our way of dealing with what we don't want to hear. A synonym for our silencing would be denial. We deny what we don't want to hear and replace it with a more friendly idea, we forget. People stay away from the slums of cities, forget about mind-blowing events in mankind, and use all the natural resources without conservation. They paint a picture that every...
