Charles Kingsford-Smith

             Charles Kingsford-Smith was born in the Brisbane suburb of Hamilton, Australia, on February 9, 1897, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Sydney Technical College as an Electrical Engineer at age 16. When he was only 18, he joined up as a soldier in the First World War and later became a pilot. He was a very brave man who won the Military Cross. He was presented with the Military Cross by King George and at only twenty years of age and was a war hero. He had lots of adventures in his life. He made record breaking flights, around Australia, across the Pacific, to England and around the world. These flights were very dangerous because planes in those days kept breaking down and he was often in danger of being killed. He was to be the first to fly across the Pacific ocean. In 1933, after once again breaking the record for solo flight from England to Australia, he was acclaimed as the world's greatest airman. So on 6 November 1935, Charles and Tommy Pethybridge took off from England on what was to be Charles's last record breaking attempt. A day later Charles's plane disappeared near Burma. It has never been found. Charles Kingsford-Smith pioneered more long distance routes than any pilot in history. He lived and died for flying. Charles Kingsford-Smith has been called the world's greatest aviator. He was a war veteran and hero.
