In this chapter, Holden is in a hospital from a mental breakdown, and is telling about his past. He was talking about when he was going to Pencey Prep. He had recently found out that he had flunked four out his five classes, then he visited his old Social Studies teacher.
After he and his teacher had been talking for a while, his teacher said to him, "Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules." Pg. 8 If Holden doesn't follow the rules he will get in trouble or not be successful in life.
Holden gets annoyed by Ackley and his disgusting hygiene. His roommate, Stradlater, comes in and tells him that he has a date, but wants to shave first.
It turns out that Stradlater is going out with a girl that Holden has a crush on. He is afraid that something bad might happen.
Holden had a younger brother who died. He loved him and misses him very much. In thinking about this he thinks, "People never believe you." Pg. 37. Since Holden thinks that, will he be lying about things for the rest of his life?
Stradlater came back to their room, read the composition that Holden had written for him, and said that it had nothing to do with the subject it was suppose to be about. Holden ripped it up, they got into a fight and Holden ended up with a bloody nose.
Holden leaves school sooner than he was suppose to, saying, "Sleep tight, ya moron!" pg. 52.
He had been expelled again and was very angry, but wouldn't admit it.
Holden got onto a train that was going into New York and ran into the mother of a classmate. She wondered about where he was going and he told her another series of lies.
Deciding he was lonely and wanted to be with somebody, he called a girl that a friend of his knew. She lived in the city. She told him that she was busy, so even that did not work out for him.
