Could sloth be the ultimate cause of loneliness? Sloth is a term meaning "lazy". The unwilling behavior of people to not seize the moment or to just sit by and let the world pass. Herman Melville tells a grim story of sloth in "Bartleby, The Scrivener". Ernest Hemingway depicts a soldiers struggles to readapt to small town America. "Soldier's Home" and William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" shows us that even amidst friends and family we can hold ourselves mentally hostage. Advances in technology doesn't always prove that working smarter not harder is the best solution. Is sloth the cause of loneliness or just a symptom.
             Melville's "Bartleby, The Scrivener" is set in the fast paced city of New York, Wall St. to be exact. Bartleby is a copier for a lawyer. The lawyer is the narrator of this story. Bartleby exhibition of sloth ended his career and his life. He doesn't want to fit into the society, as he lets things just happen around him. Any task given to him by his employer (other than copying) is answered with the phrase "I would prefer not to." The lawyer decides to move his office to rid himself of the scrivener. Believing the relocation had exonerated himself of Bartleby, he is made aware of Bartleby's strange behavior. Bartleby had remained in the building, dwelling the halls and sleeping in the entry at night. The lawyer is persuaded to talk to Bartleby about abandoning the building. He suggest many different jobs Bartleby can pursue. Bartleby only answerers in the same manner by saying he would prefer not to and then saying he is not particular, as if to hint he wants to work. Bartleby was arrested for loitering. While in jail, he refuses any help or food. He is now at the apex of his slothfulness. Bartleby is content with doing what he had been doing, nothing.
