             then put the blossoms on his bed. A couple of days later, Baumer discovered that he
             was missing. Then, after a few weeks of Deterings disappearance, news came that
             he had tried to head back to Germany but was captured by the military police. This
             was the last they ever heard of Detering.
             Leer was one of the more mature of Baumer's buddies that joined the army.
             Leer and Baumer stick together through most of the war. That is until one night
             Baumer and Leer get entrapped in a shell hole. When a shell explodes, fragments of
             it fly into the air and slice open Leer's hip. The fragments that cut his hip also cut
             an artery and in a few minutes, Leer falls over and dies.
             Tjaden was the cunning and tricky fellow of the group. At many times,
             reminded of Captain Hawkeye Pierce, from MASH, Tjaden is the one that brings
             the color into the group. He was one of the men that lived out through the longest
             in the book but is fatally wounded in the stomach.
             Muller is one of the smarter ones of the group. He is cunning and uses his
             wit to carry on throughout the army. He even took his school books with him when
