             Nadine, fourteen years old, rejects the idea of being a woman. Refuses to clean, cook or sew.

             The bushman leaves, and Nadine is pregant with her son, Harry.
             Cornelius leaves unexpectedly, and is not heard of again for forty years.
             Nadine leaves soon after, leaving her baby for Jessica Olive to care for.
             Jessica Olive knows where to find Nadine - and arrives at the brothel just after Nadine leaves on a barge.
             A look at the lives of the other prostitutes and their reasons for their job.
             A storm comes, and Nadine and the rest of the brothel are dragged out to sea, never to be seen again.
             Jessica Olive has survived the loss of Cornelius and Nadine, and is managing a successful bar and boarding house.
             Has willingly raised Nadine's Harry, but has not passed him off as her own. He is still rightfully Nadine's son, although he does regard George as a brother.

             Harry marries Clytie, who Jessica Olive believes she likes more than she likes Harry.
             George buys some cheap acerage near Mango, and Jessica Olive comes down to inpect it.
             Jessica still shows her independance and rejects man's idea of femininity by wearing her skirts higher to make it easier for her to walk.
             Jessica Olive talks with Father Madigan, and ends up telling him what she thinks of men and the Church.
             She makes it clear that she still follows God, but rejects the ideals of the Church.
