William Golding said that the strength of a society must depend on the ethical
nature and not on any political system in his novel ¡§Lord of the Flies¡. He wrote the book
to show the political system cannot govern the society without consider the defect of
human nature. The following paragraphs show the three major characters in the book led
Jack is introduced as an antagonist with an ugly sense of cruelty. At the beginning
of the book the position of Jack and Ralph is pretty much the same. They share similar
opinions about their situation and its solution. They both want to be rescued. They both
realize that there are a lot of things they must do to survive on the island. Jack¡s desire to
be Chief was clearly show up in his first appearance. When the idea of having a chief was
mentioned Jack spoke out immediately, ¡§I ought to be chief¡ (p.21). At first Jack and his
hunters do what they are asked to, but as time went on, they soon turn to savage. The
freedom offered to him by the island allowed Jack to express the darker sides of his
personality. ¡§The mask was a thing on its own behind which Jack hid, liberated from
shame and self-consciousness¡ (p.69). Through hunting, Jack lost his fear of blood and of
killing living animals. His natural desire for violence was brought out by his hunting of
pigs. ¡§I¡m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt
when I do can come too¡ (p.127). Later on, most of the big kids leave Ralph and go
hunting with Jack. They realize that Jack was stronger than Ralph and have more freedom
and fun for being savage. Golding wrote the story in 1954, shortly after WW2. The story
is pretty much as a political story which tells the tale of war between dictatorship and
democracy. Jack represents a Hitler, a dictator. He believes in controlling the island
through force and govern the island trough his hunters.
