Many authors and philosophers helped to develop the magical modern religion and to articulate parts of its belief structure. The religion finds its roots in ancient ways. It is believed to have psychic connections and sympathy with those who were burnt in the medieval period, and indeed with all individuals who have been oppressed and killed in the name of religion. The Neo-Pagan movement, considered the 'rebirth of witchcraft', began in the mid-Twentieth Century. Wicca and witchcraft have changed greatly over the years and is now one of the fastest growing spiritual paths in the world. Now there are as many traditions of witchcraft as there are ways to work magic. Wicca is a "life affirming, nature oriented religion that poses no threat to anyone, either those practicing it, or those of other faiths." It is a religion of love for nature, fellow creatures, humans and the earth (Friedberg 2-3, Walker 2, Kettler 3, Baker 1 & 3).
             Partly based on the concepts, deities, symbols, and seasonal days of celebration of the ancient Celtic people, Wicca contains eight sabbats, festivals, which mark the year as it turns through its seasons. For example, Samhain begins the Wiccan year. It is a time of death, honoring and communing with those spirits who have passed on. A basic Samhain ritual could include the following:
             - Have guests select a candle and choose where they will
             - Send all but assistant upstairs
             - Purify and cast circle with salt water; light sacred candle, and smudge circle with sage.
